Hymne des Russischen Reiches (1833-1917)

Die Haupthymne des Russischen Reiches war „Gott schütze den Zaren!“ (russisch: Боже, Царя храни! | Bozhe, Tsarya khrani!), which was the official national anthem from 1833 until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The melody was composed in 1833 by Prince Alexei Fyodorovich Lvov, with lyrics by Vasily Zhukovsky. Tsar Nicholas I personally selected Lvov's music after a competition to replace the previous anthem. "God Save the Tsar!" had an Orthodox religious character and symbolized the unity of the Tsar and the people. It became a powerful symbol of Russian autocracy and was frequently used at official events until its abolition after the abdication of Nicholas II in 1917.
