Pathlines visualisation of Wind Velocity Simulation in Unreal Engine
Wind flow analysis is crucial for understanding urban ventilation, pollutant dispersion, and creating a healthier urban environment. With the help of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), various scenarios can be assessed, and the effects of changes in urban morphology can be predicted. The video shows airflow trajectories in a central district of Sofia under prevailing north-northwesterly wind conditions. The analysis is carried out in Аnsys® multiphysics software, and for better immersion in the urban environment, the results are visualised also in Unreal Engine®. The lines show the path and speed of air currents, revealing distinct turbulence patterns and channelling between tall buildings. Such effects impact air quality and thermal comfort in the city. The GATE Institute team expresses its gratitude to Orfeas Eleftheriou and to the Digital Twin Cities Centre (DTCC) for the development of the Unreal Engine visualisations, which bring complex urban simulations to life and make them accessible to a wider audience. We also express special gratitude to our partners at DTCC, Chalmers University of Technology and the National Research Infrastructure for Data Visualisation (InfraVis), Sweden, for the successful collaboration and shared commitment to developing research and innovation in the digital urban environment.
